Read Psalm 72:1-7, 18-19.
Psalm 72 is a Messianic psalm, a psalm originally written by or for one of Israel’s kings, but whose fulfillment came ultimately in King Jesus. In a divided kingdom and ultimately among a conquered and exiled nation, Israel’s hope became increasingly focused on the Messiah—the prophet like Moses, a descendant of David, the Anointed One from God. Although Israel’s expectations of what the Messiah would be like (more of a military leader) and what the Messiah would do (deliver them from being ruled by another nation) was off, their hope was focused on the right Person.
One of the responsibilities of the king was to administer justice in the kingdom, especially to the afflicted, the poor and the oppressed. In our own day we need to continue to pay attention to the strong biblical theme of justice and join the Lord Jesus in ensuring justice for those on the margins of society. In that way we bring the hope of Christ to everyone. I love the image the psalmist uses in verse 6. Picture a farmer in her field, standing in a soaking rain, arms raised in celebration of relief after a long drought.
Years ago, I read a story by Max Lucado about a neighborhood dad with a good arm that often got home from work about the time the kids on the block were playing pick up football. Everyone wanted this dad on their team because they knew if he was their QB they would win for sure! That’s the kind of hope we have in King Jesus! I was 10 years old when I came to believe in Jesus and gave my heart to Him. Since then I’ve come to understand that when my faith and hope are in Him, in His death, resurrection, restoration to all power in heaven and earth, and in His return, I have a Source of hope that endures through all the ups and downs of life. I’m going to win for sure! Our faith and hope can be in no other! Where is your faith and hope these days?
