Weekly Update

GCN Family,

This weekend is Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost is a Jewish Holiday, also called Shavout. It’s a celebration of the giving of the Law to Moses at Mount Sinai. It’s so fitting that, in Acts 2, the Holy Spirit fell on the early believers at Pentecost. Check this out: While God was giving the Law to Moses, the Israelites were building and bowing down to a golden calf. Because of their disobedience, 3,000 Israelites died that day (Exodus 32:28). But on Pentecost in Acts 2, when the Holy Spirit filled and empowered those disciples, 3,000 people were added to their number that day! (Acts 2:41). The letter of the law kills, but the Spirit gives life. (2 Corinthians 3:6)

Bottom line: We need the Holy Spirit no less today than those early believers did 2,000 years ago. Simon Pononsby said, “To be filled with the Holy Spirit leaves no room to be filled with anything else.” I would say it like this: We can’t be filled with the Holy Spirit if we are full of ourselves. So, we pray: Come, Holy Spirit.

Condolences…
  • It’s with a heavy heart that I share this: Riley Young passed on Sunday, May 12th. He is the son of Cathy, and the brother to Mary, Robert, and Ryan. We grieve alongside the family, and we lift them up in prayer. Our God is a God of comfort. A Celebration of Life Service will be this Sunday, May 19th, at 2pm at GCN. A reception in the Life Center will follow the service. All are invited.
