Weekly Update

I am challenged by this walk through the book of Philippians (“the letter of joy”) on Sundays.

Joy looks like Jesus. Reading the gospels, I don’t picture Jesus as a buzzkill. He was full of life and full of joy. Just one example: I’m taking a few liberties here, but when Jesus walks on water to meet up with his disciples on boat in the middle of the night, I picture Jesus cracking up when his disciples think He’s a ghost.

Joy looks like Jesus.

That also means that joy looks like the Body of Christ. The church.

This past Sunday, I walked out of the sanctuary about 20 minutes after the end of worship service and saw a lobby full of people. A lot of chatting, a lot of laughing, some praying, some eating. That is a picture of joy.

A couple months ago, we unveiled new furniture and seating areas in the GCN Lobby. This was possible thanks to the stewardship of our Property Team, as a part of the lobby flooring update back in the fall. On one level, it’s just sofas, comfy chairs, and some tables. But at a hospitality-of-Jesus level, it’s a means for people to share joy together.

There are a lot of people in the world who lack joy. May we be a church who loves like Jesus, is filled with joy, like Jesus, and who lives like Jesus.
