Weekly Update

Welcome Home.

Anybody else love watching those videos of soldiers who have been deployed for many months, and then are finally reunited with their families? The tears of joy, the lingering embraces, the sighs of relief finally knowing that your loved one is home.

One of my favorite psalms is Psalm 90. It’s one of those rare psalms of Moses, and it starts out like this: God, through all the generations you have been our HOME! (Psalm 90:1, NLT)

Saint Augustine said it like this: “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.”

Home is not a geographic location. Home is a personal relationship with God, made possible through Jesus Christ alone.

A beautiful biblical picture of this is found in Luke 15, the Parable of the Prodigal Son. The younger son has disrespected his father, taken his inheritance prematurely, partied it all away, and is now at rock bottom. Verse 17 is the turning point. It says, “he came to his senses.” Translation: He was homesick. He had spent so much time searching for fulfillment that can only come from what he just left: Home.

He got up, went to his father, and “while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.” (Luke 15:20)

Welcome Home, son!

This Sunday is Welcome Home Sunday. We’ll celebrate baptisms, have a picnic, kids will jump on inflatables, and fun will be had! But it’s not just a party on the first Sunday of September. Really, it’s an opportunity for us to paint a picture for our neighborhood (all the people we invite to join us) of who Jesus is! Jesus is HOME. Jesus is the One who, while we were still a long way off, He saw us, He was filled with compassion, He pursued us, and He welcomed us home. While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

So many people, all around us, are looking for a people and a place to belong. By God’s grace, filled with His Spirit, may we be those people!

Who are you inviting to join you this Sunday? Send that text, send that LINK (click here), make that phone call.

Welcome Home,

Pastor Brian
