Weekly Update

Hi GCN Family,

Today is traditionally called “Holy Wednesday” or “Spy Wednesday” within the life of the church. This is the part of the Holy Week story when Judas conspired with the chief priests to betray Jesus. Maybe the most troubling phrase in this part of the story is found in Luke 22:3. It says, “then Satan entered Judas.”

I don’t know exactly what to do with that line. Certainly, we humans have free will. It’s not as though Judas was controlled by evil, against his will. However, I do think it’s a reminder that evil in our world is much deeper than simply humans doing bad things. There is an Enemy.

Also, notice the connection between Judas’ betrayal of Jesus for 30 pieces of silver (Matthew 26:15) and Judas’ frustration at Jesus for allowing Mary to anoint his feet with oil using expensive perfume (John 12:4-6). John notes that Judas is apparently controlled by greed. This is complicated, but Judas is somehow convinced that 30 pieces of silver is more precious to him than devotion to Jesus.

So, today, in the middle of Holy Week, I think we just have to sit with this reality: God became human, loved everyone selflessly, preached a message of repentance, and then was ultimately betrayed by one of his closest followers. This is not right. Yes, resurrection is coming, but today, we recognize the brokenness and sinfulness of the world. And it’s not just “out there”; it’s also in me. It’s in us.

A good question to ask on this Wednesday of Holy Week: Holy Spirit, what are the areas of my life where I lack trust in You? What in me is not pleasing to you? Reveal any selfishness, pride, or unforgiveness. Lead me to repentance. Amen.
